Kitesurfing in Dakhla

Kitesurfing in Dakhla; Situated on the edge of the Moroccan desert, the Dakhla peninsula is home to a huge 45 km-long lagoon in the Atlantic Ocean, surrounded by spectacular dunes and desert topography. Dakhla is also a kitesurfer’s paradise.

If you’re passionate about scuba diving, you’ll surely be tempted by kitesurfing. And Dakhla is surely one of the top destinations for learning and practicing this popular sea sport.

Kitesurfing in Dakhla:

Dakhla is one of the most famous destinations for kitesurfing, and one of the best in the world for beginners. Along the lagoon with a view of the desert in the background, the scenery is magnificent while kitesurfing. The water is flat and warm all year round, making it an ideal place for those looking to learn and enjoy a pleasant stay.

Getting to Dakhla:

From Paris to Casablanca via Dakhla, you’ll need to pay around 300 euros for a round trip. This will give you an idea of the estimated cost of your flight to Dakhla. Flights depart twice daily from Casablanca. Two airlines serve the destination from Casablanca: Royal Air Maroc and Air Arabia.

Accommodation in Dakhla:

There are plenty of offers for kitesurfers of all budgets. The resorts are all located in the lagoon, where the winds cross channels leading to excellent wind currents.
Dakhla is a very small town! So you shouldn’t expect luxury boutiques or places to discover… so you’ll spend all your time kitesurfing on the lagoon or some other seaside activity.

Fortunately, the resorts are all complete and perfect for those looking to do nothing but kitesurf. You can compare them all on TripAdvisor to get an idea of which resort to choose.
There are over 10 kitesurfing resorts in Dakhla. Dakhla Attitude is the best known and oldest in the region. And with the region booming, more resorts are being built.
An alternative for those who don’t want to spend an entire holiday at a single resort is Airbnb, on which there are quite a few accessible hosts not far from the resorts.

Where to eat in Dakhla:

All hotels offer meals included with accommodation and you’re pretty much limited to the food you have in your hotel, unless you head to the town of Dakhla, where you can find cafés and restaurants with street food (meat sticks, Arabic bread, fresh fruit and juices), or simply buy your own vegetables, nuts and, if you’re feeling homesick, a selection of good German/Swiss chocolate at the town market.

Kitesurfing in Dakhla! How much does it cost?

Prices for kitesurfing vary from resort to resort, but also from country to country. Dakhla is certainly one of the most affordable destinations for this type of activity. The price of kitesurfing equipment is pretty much the same all over the world, and once you’re experienced enough to kite, you won’t just need the equipment and the wind.

Compare this to scuba diving, for example, where you need equipment, a boat to hire perhaps, a crew and a guide… Renting kitesurfing equipment doesn’t vary much from place to place, although learning courses do.

Best time of year to visit Dakhla:

When visiting Dakhla, February, May, June, and July are the ideal months to go. Avoid the rest of the year, as there’s less wind and therefore less chance of kiting in good conditions. Paddleboarding is also one of the activities practiced in the region when there’s no wind, from October to December for example.
